Abstract: This study reports on fast neutron dose limits beyond which mechanical failure of pyrocarbon layers occurs with coated particle fuel. The influence of irradiation temperature, layer geometry and structural parameters in the pyrocarbon on the lifetime of the particles is described besides. For this study irradiation tests in the BR2-Reactor (Mol, Belgium), DFR (Dounreay Fast Reactor, Scotland), FRJ2 (Jülich, German Federal Republic), R2 (Studsvik, Sweden) and in the Dragon Reactor Winfrith, England) were evaluated and are interpreted. In the experiments a fast neutron dose of more than 20x10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, E>0.1 MeV, had been accumulated with temperatures ranging from 600 to 1300°C. The most determining factor on the lifetime of particle coatings is the PyC structure which, however, cannot sufficiently be decribed by the parameters generally used: density, apparent crystallite size and anisotropy of orientation. Additional detailed information on manufacture therefore is essential. Particles fail at higher neutron fluence the lower the irradiation temperature. Geometrical factors such as layer sequence and layer thickness are of minor influence. Particles irradiated as loose fail earlier than those pressed into graphite matrix.
